“Nếu dân Ta, dân vốn kêu cầu Danh Ta, mà biết hạ mình xuống khẩn nguyện và tìm kiếm Nhan Ta, từ bỏ những con đường xấu xa mà trở lại, thì Ta, từ trời, Ta sẽ nghe và thứ tha tội lỗi nó và sẽ phục hưng xứ sở của nó.” (2 Sử Biên Niên 7:14)
Thế giới bị sốc khi chứng kiến Thế Vận Hội Mùa Hè ở Paris khai mạc bằng màn trình diễn Bữa Tiệc Ly một cách lố bịch và báng bổ. Thật khó hiểu tại sao đức tin của hơn 2 tỷ người lại có thể bị xúc phạm một cách ngạo mạn và cố ý như vậy.
Chúng tôi, các Giám Mục Công Giáo trên khắp thế giới, thay mặt cho các Kitô hữu khắp nơi, yêu cầu Ủy Ban Olympic bác bỏ hành động báng bổ này và xin lỗi tất cả những người có đức tin. Mặc dù khó có thể tin rằng một sự nhạo báng có chủ ý đầy thù ghét như vậy đối với bất kỳ tôn giáo nào khác lại được trưng bày trên trường thế giới, nhưng hành động hèn hạ này vẫn đe dọa mọi người thuộc mọi tôn giáo và không thuộc tôn giáo nào, vì nó mở ra cánh cửa cho những kẻ có quyền lực làm bất cứ điều gì họ muốn với những người họ không thích.
Để vâng theo lời kêu gọi của Thiên Chúa hãy hạ mình cầu nguyện và tránh xa cái ác, chúng tôi, những người ký tên dưới đây, cam kết thực hiện một ngày cầu nguyện và ăn chay để đền tạ vì tội báng bổ này. Là một phần của lời cầu nguyện của chúng tôi, mỗi người chúng tôi sẽ dâng Hy Lễ Thánh trong Thánh Lễ, trong đó Cuộc Khổ Nạn, cái chết và sự Phục sinh của Chúa Kitô hiện diện với chúng ta bằng việc chúng ta tuân theo giới răn mà Người đã ban cho chúng ta trong Bữa Tiệc Ly, “hãy làm điều này để nhớ đến Thầy.”
Bữa Tiệc Ly là bữa ăn mà Chúa Giêsu thành Nazareth đã chia sẻ với những người bạn thân nhất của Người vào đêm trước khi Người chết vì họ và vì chúng ta. Chúng tôi cầu nguyện rằng những kẻ tìm cách làm hại người khác bằng quyền lực của mình và những người bị tổn hại sẽ noi gương tình yêu hy sinh quên mình của Người, để hòa bình, lễ phép và tôn trọng lẫn nhau được lập lại trên thế giới.

An Open Letter from Catholic Bishops to the International Olympic Committee
“If then my people, upon whom my name has been pronounced, humble themselves and pray, and seek my face and turn from their evil ways, I will hear them from heaven and
pardon their sins and heal their land.” (2 Chr 7:14)
With shock the world watched as the summer Olympics in Paris opened with a grotesque and blasphemous depiction of the Last Supper. It is hard to understand how the faith of over 2 billion
people can be so casually and intentionally blasphemed. We, Catholic bishops from around the world, on behalf of Christians everywhere, demand that the Olympic Committee repudiate this blasphemous action and apologize to all people of faith. While it is hard to believe that such an intentionally hateful mockery of any other religion would be displayed on the world stage, this despicable action nonetheless threatens people of all faiths and of none, as it opens the door to those with power doing whatever they wish to people they do not like.
In obedience to God’s call to humble ourselves in prayer and turn away from evil, we the undersigned commit to a day of prayer and fasting in reparation for this blasphemy. As part of our prayer, each of us will offer the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass, in which Christ’s Passion, death and Resurrection are made present to us by our obedience to the commandment he gave us at the Last Supper, “do this in memory of me.”
The Last Supper was the meal that Jesus of Nazareth shared with his closest friends the night before he died for them, and for us. We pray that those who seek to harm others with their power,
and those harmed, will imitate his self-sacrificial love, so that peace, decency and mutual respect may be restored in the world.
