Jesus, The Giver of life

Rev. John Jay Hughes

“Whoever believes in me, even if he dies, will live, and everyone who lives and believes in me will never die.”

Why was Jesus crucified? Luke’s gospel suggests that it was the result of the resentment felt by the leaders of Jesus’ people at the enthusiasm of the common people “for all the great things they had seen” Jesus do. (Lk 19:37, Jerus.Bible) In John ’s gospel the raising of Lazarus is the climax of these “great things” which provoked enthusiasm in some, resentment in others. It is the last and greatest of the seven “signs”, as John calls them, which show us who Jesus is.

No room in the inn

Rev. John Jay Hughes

But with those two words, “No room,” he had missed out on the greatest opportunity life would ever offer him.

“NO ROOM IN THE INN .”
Christmas Midnight.  Lk. 2:1-14.
AIM:   To help the hearers make room for Jesus Christ.

We have less hard information about Jesus’ birth than most people suppose.  We don’t even know the date: December 25th was not selected until the fourth century.  Nor do we know exactly where Mary gave birth to her child, save that it was not in what then passed for an inn at Bethlehem .

The night is advanced, the day is at hand

Rev. John Jay Hughes

“The night is advanced,” Paul tells us in our second reading, “the day is at hand. Let us then throw off the works of darkness and put on the armor of light.”

I want you to embark with me on an exciting flight of the imagination. You won’t have to take off your shoes, or undergo a full body scan or pat down. But I ask you to fasten your seat belt, and bring your seat back to the full upright position.

Chính quyền là bạn hay là kẻ thù của dân? Trong cuộc bầu cử vừa qua, nhiều người đã cho rằng chính quyền là kẻ thù của dân.

Perseverance and trials and disasters

Rev. John Jay Hughes

“By your perseverance you will secure your lives.”

“There will be powerful earthquakes, famines, and plagues from place to place; and awesome sights and mighty signs will come from the sky.” That sounds like some kind of antique science fiction. What is Jesus telling us?

Life beyond death

Rev. John Jay Hughes

32nd Sunday in Ordinary Time, Year C. 2 Thessalonians 2:16–3:5; Luke 20:27-38.
AIM: To explain Jesus teaching about life beyond death.

What will happen to us when we die? Is death simply the end, like the snuffing out of a candle? And if there is life beyond death, what will it be like? Which of us has never asked questions like those?
